What are the disadvantages of on-ear headphones?

On-ear headphones squeeze your cartilage instead of cupping your whole ear. That pressure point becomes a real nuisance after an hour—some people feel it in fifteen minutes. Unlike over-ears that distribute weight around the ear, on-ears press directly down. If you wear glasses, double the trouble. The pads push the frames into your temples, creating a headache machine. Also, they don’t seal against your head. That means ambient noise leaks in (bus engines, chatty coworkers) and your music leaks out. Anyone sitting next to you on a plane will hear your drum solos. And bass response? It’s thinner because you lose that airtight chamber.

You also can’t wear them for long listening sessions without fidgeting. The constant readjustment gets old fast. For commutes, they lack the isolation of ANC over-ears, so you crank the volume to compete with street noise—bad for your ears. They’re portable, sure, but that portability comes at the cost of comfort and sound bleed. If you’ve got a larger head or sensitive ears, skip on-ears entirely. They work for quick calls or podcasts, but for movies, gaming, or any serious listening, they’re a compromise too far.
