Which is better, ANC or ENC?

ANC and ENC aren’t competing for the same job. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) cuts the steady hum of the world around you—plane engines, subway rumbles, HVAC drones. It uses microphones and inverted sound waves to quiet the ambient noise before it reaches your ears. ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation), on the other hand, focuses solely on your microphone input. It filters out background racket so the person on the other end of a call hears your voice, not the coffee grinder or traffic. Manufacturers slap "ENC" on budget earbuds to sound fancy, but don't confuse it with ANC. One is for your listening peace; the other is for call clarity.

So which is "better"? Depends on what you're doing. Commuting or flying? ANC wins—you don’t want to hear the bus. Taking calls from a noisy open office or a street corner? ENC is your actual friend. If you game or work remotely, prioritize ENC on your headset's mic. For music or focus, ANC matters more. Many premium headphones pack both, but if you have to pick, ask yourself: do I need to hear less, or do I need to be heard better? They're not interchangeable, and one isn't universally superior.
