If you're chasing the sweet spot between performance and price, the iPhone 13 (refurbished or used) is the answer. It regularly shows up for $400–$450 on sites like Gazelle, Back Market, or Apple’s own refurbished store. You get the A15 chip (still a beast), an excellent OLED screen, dual cameras with sensor-shift stabilization, and battery life that easily lasts a full day. The 13 also fixed the telephoto obsession from earlier Pros—most people don’t need it. Compared to the cheaper SE 3. the 13 gives you a modern design, MagSafe, and way less bezel. Compared to the 14. you’re basically losing crash detection and a year of software updates for $200 less. That’s a trade worth making.
If $400 still stings, drop down to a refurbished iPhone 12 for around $320–$350. Same OLED screen as the 13. decent A14 chip, and MagSafe. The downsides: worse battery life (expect to top up by 6 PM if you use it heavily) and one fewer year of iOS support. Avoid the 11 series entirely—LCD panel and no 5G make it feel dated. And skip the SE unless you absolutely need a tiny phone or a new-in-box warranty; its battery is a joke. Bottom line: stretch to a used 13 if you can. It’s the best balance of cost, longevity, and daily usability.
