If you want a new iPhone on a tight budget, the iPhone SE (3rd gen) is your only real move. It starts at $429. packs the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13. and supports 5G. You’re getting flagship-level speed in a chassis from 2017 — small screen, single camera, and a mediocre battery. That’s the trade-off. For someone who just needs iMessage, Apple Pay, and a phone that won’t lag for three years, it works fine. Just don’t expect to shoot cinematic videos or game for hours without a power bank.
Used or refurbished changes the game. A refurbished iPhone 12 (from Apple’s own store or a reliable seller like Back Market) often runs $350–$400. You get an OLED display, MagSafe, better cameras, and noticeably longer battery life than the SE. Step up to a used iPhone 13 for around $450 if you can stretch it — the extra battery and improved cameras are worth it. Avoid the iPhone 11 now: no 5G, LCD screen, and its A13 chip is showing age. Also skip any 64GB model unless you barely use apps. Bottom line: buy the SE only if you absolutely need new-in-box; otherwise, grab a used 12 or 13 and get way more phone for the same money.
