Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 have started strongly in China, with early numbers suggesting high consumer interest. According to reports, the first-hour pre-order volume on JD.com, a major Chinese online retailer, surpassed the first-day pre-orders for the iPhone 16 last year.

iPhone 17 Sees Strong Early Sales in China, iPhone Air Launch Delayed

The base model iPhone 17 with 256GB storage has been the most popular choice. The device offers a larger 6.3-inch display with ProMotion, an always-on screen, an upgraded front camera, and a 48MP ultra-wide lens—all while keeping the starting price at $799.

Meanwhile, the launch of the iPhone Air has been delayed indefinitely in China. Apple is still awaiting regulatory approval related to the device’s eSIM-only functionality.

Strong early sales in China may ease investor concerns about Apple’s competitiveness in the region amid growing competition from local brands.

In the U.S., some configurations of the iPhone 17 are already facing delivery estimates of 2–3 weeks, indicating healthy demand. The iPhone 17 Pro is also performing well.

Apple is expected to share early sales data during its October earnings call, though most of the sales impact will be reflected in the holiday quarter results.
