Apple's latest macOS update, Tahoe, has quietly removed a tiny but beloved icon familiar to longtime Mac users. The small, glove-shaped cursor, often nicknamed the "Mickey Mouse glove," is gone.
This cursor appeared for decades whenever a user moved their pointer over a clickable link or button. Apple replaced it in the Tahoe 26 developer resources with a more standard, generic glove cursor design. While potentially more modern, the change marks the loss of a distinctive visual quirk.
The removal follows a pattern of Apple gradually phasing out playful elements from its software. In 2016. the classic Mac startup chime disappeared from new machines, only returning as an option years later. More recently, macOS also dropped the little "poof" animation and sound effect when dragging an item out of the Dock.
For many users, especially those who remember older Macs, the glove cursor was a recognizable part of the experience. Its absence in the Tahoe materials suggests Apple is continuing to streamline its operating system's look and feel.
It remains possible Apple could change its mind before the final public release of Tahoe, similar to how the startup sound eventually returned. Otherwise, the familiar little glove cursor appears to have been retired for good. Some developers might even create tools to bring the old cursor back for users who miss it.
