Meta just confirmed a massive $10 billion-plus investment in Scale AI, catapulting the San Francisco startup’s value past $29 billion. The deal’s real prize? Scale AI’s 28-year-old founder Alexandr Wang is jumping ship to Meta.
Wang—who started Scale AI in 2016—will now help lead Meta’s push for “super AI.” In a statement, Meta called it a “strategic partnership,” promising deeper collaboration on AI training data.
Scale AI’s specialty? Teaching machines to understand the world. It partners with companies and governments to prep raw data—like images and text—for AI systems. Wang claims his 1.500-employee firm has “no limits” after Meta’s vote of confidence.
The move fires a direct shot at rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft in the AI arms race. Meta plans to share full details within weeks.
