Huawei just dropped its Pura 80 Ultra smartphone with a camera trick no one else has: a single lens that switches between two zoom levels.

Huawei's New Phone Packs Wild Camera Tech: Two Zooms in One Lens

Here’s how it works: A slanted 1/1.28-inch sensor, periscope parts, and two prisms team up inside the phone. Slide a mirror, and you get either a sharp 3.7x zoom (like an 83mm camera lens) or punch in further to 9.4x zoom (like 212mm). It shoots pro-level 16-bit RAW photos and 4K video too.

The main camera uses China’s first self-made 1-inch sensor (likely from SmartSens). It captures 50-megapixel shots with extreme light range (16EV), pairs with a variable f/1.6-f/4.0 aperture lens, and borrows the multi-spectral "Red Maple" color tech from Huawei’s Mate 70.

Other specs:

6.8-inch 120Hz OLED screen

13MP selfie camera

5.700mAh battery (100W wired / 80W wireless charging)

Weighs 233.5g; comes in black or gold

Three cheaper models launch too—Pura 80. 80 Pro, and 80 Pro+—with smaller screens and less advanced cameras (48MP zoom instead of the Ultra’s dual-zoom). Huawei claims all models run 36% faster than last year’s phones but stays quiet about the processor.

Standard Pura 80 price drops next month.
