Elon Musk has announced XChat, a new communication tool replacing direct messages on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. XChat rolls out starting today.

The service promises stronger privacy with end-to-end encryption – similar to Bitcoin's security – and lets users make voice or video calls without needing a phone number. XChat also supports sending any file type and offers disappearing "read-and-vanish" messages.
"Brand new XChat is rolling out now," Musk posted on X. "Encrypted, disappearing DMs, ability to send any file type & audio/video calling. All new architecture built in Rust."
Some features, like four-digit passcode locks and advanced group chat options, require a paid X subscription. XChat marks a step towards Musk's goal of turning X into an "everything app," combining social media, messaging, and more.
The full launch schedule isn't set, but X engineer Zach Warunek confirmed the change: "Obviously, X won't delete DMs. We're rewriting them." XChat will completely replace the current messaging system in the coming weeks.
