Mozilla will shut down Pocket, its popular bookmarking tool, on July 8. Users can export their saved articles, recipes, and videos before October 8. when all user data will be permanently deleted.
Annual subscribers will get money back based on unused time after July 8. Automatic refunds will be processed. Pocket’s browser extensions and mobile apps were removed from stores starting May 22. People who already have the app can still download it again until October.
Pocket started in 2007 as "Read It Later." It let users save web content for later. Mozilla built Pocket into its Firefox browser in 2015 and bought the service two years later. In 2021. Pocket reported over 30 million users saving more than 1 billion items. It was a top tool on Android and iOS phones, alongside Instapaper.
Mozilla stated the shutdown is due to "changes in how people save and read online content."
Reaction on Reddit was sad. "I used it almost daily... It’s the end of an era," wrote one user. "Yes, people don’t read anymore. Sad," commented another. Some users are moving to Instapaper, with one saying, "The user experience got bad lately."
