Retail giant Walmart revealed plans to eliminate roughly 1.500 corporate roles this week, targeting employees in its global tech division and U.S. operations teams. The cuts will impact staff at its Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters, as well as remote workers in Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto.

In internal memos, Walmart’s Chief Technology Officer Suresh Kumar and U.S. President John Furner called the move a push to “eliminate layers of complexity” and speed up decision-making. The company stressed the restructuring aims to adapt to a “fast-changing retail environment,” though it clarified the layoffs are unrelated to recent U.S. tariff policies.
While roles are being cut, Walmart said it will create new positions tied to its growth strategy. Affected employees will receive support, including options to shift into open roles or accept severance packages. The retailer, which employs over 2.1 million people globally, remains the largest private employer in the U.S.
The announcement highlights Walmart’s efforts to balance cost pressures with innovation as it navigates economic uncertainty and shifting consumer demands.
