Apple’s AirPods lineup won’t see major updates this year, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The tech giant will rely on its current AirPods 4 series to drive sales, with next-gen upgrades like the infrared camera-equipped AirPods Pro 3 pushed to 2026 and a lighter AirPods Max model slated for 2027.

Kuo, in a social media post, confirmed the Pro 3 will include an infrared camera—likely borrowed from the Powerbeats Pro 2—to enhance spatial audio and gesture controls. The camera could sync with Vision Pro headsets, adjusting sound direction as users turn their heads. Apple’s patents also hint at mid-air gesture support, allowing users to skip tracks or adjust volume without tapping earbuds.
The Pro 3 may also pack a heart rate monitor, a first for AirPods. While details on the “Lightweight” AirPods Max remain scarce, fans hope for more than just a USB-C upgrade. The original Max, released in 2020. has seen only minor tweaks despite its $549 price tag.
With no groundbreaking features until 2026. critics argue Apple risks losing momentum in the crowded wireless earbud market. Competitors like Sony and Samsung have already rolled out health-tracking earbuds this year.
“AirPods 4 are solid, but they’re playing catch-up,” said one tech reviewer. “If Apple waits till 2026. they’d better bring something revolutionary.”
