Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro could finally bury its Face ID sensors under the display, ditching the Dynamic Island’s dual-cutout design for a sleeker look, according to display analyst Ross Young. The change, expected in 2026. would leave only a single hole for the front-facing camera—for now.
Young, a former Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO and current Counterpoint Research VP, revealed the plans at an industry event. While Face ID components would vanish beneath the screen, the selfie camera still needs a visible cutout due to technical hurdles in image quality. Apple might center the remaining hole and keep Dynamic Island’s interactive features, like notifications and live activities, intact.
The move marks the latest shift in iPhone design. Since 2017’s iPhone X introduced the Face ID “notch,” Apple slimmed it to the pill-shaped Dynamic Island in 2022. Hiding Face ID would push the iPhone closer to an all-screen front.
Young cautioned that Apple will only greenlight the under-screen tech if it meets security and reliability standards. If tests show lag or glitches, the company could delay the feature.
For iPhone fans, it’s a trade-off: fewer distractions on the screen, but no full-screen revolution—yet.
