Aluminum foil isn’t just for wrapping sandwiches. Experts reveal how this kitchen staple can tackle everything from dull scissors to drafty doors—no fancy tools required.

Clean Like a Pro
Petya Holevich, a cleaning expert at Fantastic Services, swears by crumpled foil balls to scrub stubborn pans. “Add soapy water and scrub—it works on grills and ovens too,” she says.
Shine Silver in Minutes
Tarnished forks or jewelry? Line a bowl with foil, add boiling water and baking soda, then drop in silverware. “The tarnish transfers to the foil, leaving your pieces sparkling,” Holevich explains.
Sharpen Scissors (Temporarily)
Fold foil three times and cut through it with dull scissors. “It won’t replace a sharpener, but it’ll buy you time,” she adds.
Paint Without the Mess
Skip painter’s tape. Myles Robinson, founder of UK Composite Doors, suggests wrapping doorknobs in foil instead. “It molds to odd shapes and peels off faster,” he says.
Protect Your Garden
Hang foil strips to scare off birds, or wrap tree trunks to deter winter rodents. “They hate the texture and noise,” notes gardener Petar Ivanov.
Stop Rust on Tools
Wrap foil around tool handles to block moisture. “It’s a quick fix to keep them rust-free,” Ivanov advises.
Block Drafts
Crumble foil and stuff it into door cracks. “It’s a temporary seal that works surprisingly well,” says Robinson.
Next time you reach for the foil, remember: It’s not just for food.
