Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 will include a new feature allowing users to limit battery charging to 90% to help preserve long-term battery health, according to details revealed in the company’s official Nintendo Today! app. The move follows similar tools adopted by smartphones, laptops, and Valve’s Steam Deck handheld to slow battery aging.

Alongside the battery-saving option, the Switch 2 will let players set a numeric passcode to lock their console—a first for Nintendo’s gaming systems. While the exact number of digits hasn’t been confirmed, the feature aims to add an extra layer of privacy protection.
The Switch 2’s 90% charging cap is optional, giving users flexibility to prioritize immediate battery life or long-term health. Nintendo’s decision mirrors industry trends, as devices increasingly adopt "smart charging" to address consumer concerns about battery degradation over time.
No release date for the Switch 2 has been announced, but the new features suggest Nintendo is refining its next-gen console to compete with modern handhelds. More details are expected ahead of the rumored late-2025 launch.
