Fortnite’s iPhone Return Hinges on Apple’s Next Move

Epic Games has resubmitted Fortnite to Apple’s U.S. App Store—five years after the game was yanked for bypassing Apple’s payment rules. This time, the app includes both Apple’s in-app purchases and a link to Epic’s own checkout, testing the limits of a recent court order that forced Apple to allow external payment options.

The showdown reignites a bitter feud. In 2020, Epic deliberately broke Apple’s 30% commission rule by adding a direct payment system, sparking a global antitrust battle. Last week, a federal judge barred Apple from blocking apps that steer users to outside payments, but the tech giant is appealing the decision.

Epic’s latest submission uses an EU developer account after Apple terminated its U.S. credentials. If approved, players could buy in-game currency (V-Bucks) through Apple’s system or Epic’s store. But Apple isn’t legally required to greenlight the app—and rejecting it risks backlash.

“This is about proving fair competition exists,” an Epic spokesperson said. Apple, meanwhile, argues the court’s injunction is flawed and seeks to pause its enforcement. A ruling on the delay could come by month’s end.

Developers note Apple typically reviews 90% of apps within 24 hours, but Epic’s Friday submission might not get a verdict until Tuesday. If stalled, critics may accuse Apple of dragging its feet.

For now, Fortnite fans wait to see if the game’s return marks a truce—or another battle in the App Store war.
