Google is rolling out its "Passkey" login system globally for Android users, aiming to replace passwords with fingerprint scans, face recognition, or PIN codes. The tech giant claims the move will simplify sign-ins while boosting security against hackers.
Passkeys, already supported by some apps and websites, let users skip typing passwords entirely. Instead, devices authenticate logins using built-in biometric sensors or unlock patterns. “No more forgotten passwords or SMS codes—just tap and go,” said a Google spokesperson.
The feature, now available through Google’s Password Manager in device settings, is part of a phased rollout. Android owners can update Google Play services and enable Passkeys under “Security & Privacy.” Those who prefer old-school methods can opt out manually.
While two-factor authentication remains an option, Google argues Passkeys reduce phishing risks and streamline access. “Your face or fingerprint becomes the key,” the company added.
The push follows industry efforts to phase out vulnerable passwords. Apple and Microsoft have adopted similar systems, but Google’s Android integration could accelerate mainstream adoption.
