Amazon is doubling down on cloud and quantum tech with a $4 billion push to build its first Chilean data centers—and a new quantum chip, Ocelot, aimed at outracing Google and Microsoft.

The cloud division, AWS, plans to launch its Chile operations by late 2026, marking its third Latin American hub after Brazil and Mexico. The project, already permitted, will focus on AI and cloud services while using renewable energy and minimal water—cooling servers just 4% of the year. “This isn’t just servers; it’s about powering Chile’s digital future,” said AWS South America chief Juan Pablo Estevez.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s quantum leap comes with Ocelot, a chip designed to slash error rates by 90% using "cat qubits" inspired by Schrödinger’s paradox. Unveiled at Caltech’s AWS Quantum Lab, the tech targets future breakthroughs in drug discovery and cybersecurity. “Quantum could be a $173 billion market by 2040,” said analyst Gene Munster. “Amazon’s betting big.”
