Huawei has officially unveiled its HarmonyOS computer operating system, aiming to carve a space in the global PC market dominated by Windows and macOS. The new OS, built on HarmonyOS 5, blends cross-device connectivity, cloud collaboration, and AI tools while supporting touch, keyboard, and mouse inputs. The first hardware running the system debuts on May 19.

Designed for practicality, HarmonyOS for PCs allows users to run both desktop software and mobile apps from Huawei phones or tablets. It also includes translation layers for Windows and Linux programs, easing transitions from other platforms. Over 150 major PC apps and 2,000 "fusion ecosystem" apps are slated for full compatibility by 2025. Currently, the OS supports 1,000+ peripherals—from basic keyboards to printers—with 800+ categorized as standard office gear.
Huawei emphasized office readiness during the launch, demoing smooth operation of tools like Microsoft Office, CAD software, and VS Code. The push aligns with China’s broader effort to reduce reliance on foreign tech amid ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions. Local governments and businesses are increasingly seeking homegrown alternatives to avoid sanctions and security risks.
While pricing remains undisclosed, analysts note the move could shake up enterprise markets where cost and compatibility drive decisions. Huawei’s existing HarmonyOS mobile ecosystem, used by millions in China, may give it an edge in seamless device integration—a key selling point for hybrid work setups.
Why it matters: If successful, HarmonyOS for PCs could challenge Microsoft’s stronghold in China and test global appetite for non-Western operating systems. Watch for updates post-May 19 launch.
