Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air, rumored to be the thinnest iPhone ever at just 5.5mm thick, may trade battery life for its sleek profile. Internal tests show only 60-70% of users can go a full day without charging, down from 80-90% in current models, according to The Information.

To address the issue, Apple is reportedly developing a custom battery case for the iPhone 17 Air (also dubbed iPhone 17 Slim). This marks a return to a strategy last seen with 2015’s iPhone 6 Smart Battery Case, which drew criticism for adding bulk. “It’s a trade-off,” said an insider. “But it lets users choose when to boost power.”
The Air model’s slim design—nearly 30% thinner than the iPhone 16—forces compromises beyond the battery. Leaks suggest a single rear camera and mono speaker, scaling back hardware to save space.
Despite these cuts, the iPhone 17 lineup is expected to pack upgrades, including 12GB RAM across all models for smoother multitasking and AI-driven tasks.
No pricing details were shared, but the battery case could add $99-$149 based on past accessories. Apple’s gamble? That style-conscious buyers will forgive the Air’s limits for its featherweight design.
