Yet, for all its polish, the Middleton II hasn't quite nailed the elusive equilibrium. It remains a hefty, premium-priced contender that demands a specific kind of buyer—one willing to trade ultimate convenience for acoustic finesse.

Design and Build: Classic Marshall, With Considerable Heft
Visually, the Middleton II adheres to the company's well-established playbook, and it's all the better for it. The front-facing grille is framed by that familiar textured, vinyl-like wrap, punctuated by the iconic gold script logo. The top panel features the requisite brass control knobs and a tidy LED battery indicator that manages to feel both retro and precise. It looks the part of a premium portable amplifier.
The craftsmanship here is unimpeachable, but it comes with a literal weight. Tipping the scales at 1.8 kilograms (roughly four pounds), the Middleton II possesses a reassuring density that speaks to the quality of its internal drivers and materials. That said, lugging it from room to room—or worse, to the park—reveals a minor ergonomic oversight. There is no proper integrated handle, only a carry strap. It's a design choice that prioritizes silhouette over long-haul comfort. On the upside, the rear panel houses easily accessible USB-C charging and a 3.5mm auxiliary input, while the IP67 certification ensures the unit can survive a dunk in a meter of water for up to half an hour.
Features and Functionality: Sensible Software, Missing a Few Tricks
The Middleton II operates on Marshall's standard Bluetooth app rather than the newer platform reserved for the brand's home theater gear. Inside, users will find a functional five-band equalizer and a modest suite of presets that get the job done without unnecessary complication. The app also provides a clear readout of remaining battery life, adjustable standby timeout settings, and Auracast compatibility for tapping into broadcast streams.
Battery performance is a standout metric. Marshall claims up to 30 hours of playback, a figure that holds up under reasonable volume levels and stands as a commendable feat given the power on tap. The battery preservation settings—which allow for caps on maximum charge and temperature monitoring—are a thoughtful inclusion for those who plan to keep this speaker in rotation for years.
The onboard microphone works well enough for the occasional hands-free call, but it's what the Middleton II lacks that gives some pause. Unlike the Kilburn III, there is no room compensation feature to optimize output based on acoustics. The multi-speaker pairing function found on other Marshall units is also absent. While you don't need two of these to enjoy the speaker's impressive stereo width, the inability to link a second unit for true wireless stereo or party mode feels like a missed opportunity at this price point.
Audio Performance: The Stereo Field Is the Real Star
This is where the Middleton II silences most of its critics. The low end is tight, agile, and punchy. There's no bloat or flab to be found; kick drums hit with satisfying authority, and basslines rumble without muddying the midrange. Vocals cut through with crisp clarity, and synth work retains excellent tonal character. The overall presentation is balanced and undeniably exciting.
High frequencies are well-controlled, though straight out of the box they can feel a touch reserved—lacking that last bit of shimmer on cymbal crashes. Fortunately, the onboard EQ makes quick work of this. A gentle nudge to the treble slider restores the desired sparkle without introducing harshness. The speaker also handles deep sub-bass with surprising competence, extending down to 50Hz to create a thick, immersive low-end presence. At maximum volume, a bit of compression creeps into the bass, but that's entirely forgivable for a unit this size. If you're looking to power an outdoor block party, the Kilburn III remains the more appropriate tool.
But the genuine headline here is the stereo performance. It's almost disorienting how wide and precise the soundstage is coming from a single enclosure. The separation of instruments is startlingly accurate, creating a layered, expansive listening experience that pulls you into the music. This is true 360-degree stereo; you can move around the room and the spatial cues remain intact, a trick few speakers in this class can pull off.
Detail retrieval is equally strong. Subtle percussion flourishes and the breathy texture of vocals are rendered with clarity. There's rarely a sense that the finer intricacies of a track are being lost. However, for the most exacting listeners, the lack of high-resolution Bluetooth codec support is a footnote worth considering. The Middleton II is limited to SBC and AAC. There is no LDAC, nor any flavor of aptX.

The Marshall Middleton II is a speaker of delightful contradictions. It is both rugged and refined. It is heavy, yet it produces a soundstage that feels weightless and vast. It is not the most portable option in the Marshall stable, and its price tag—along with its considerable weight—means it won't appeal to everyone. But if you prize authentic stereo imaging and that distinct Marshall aesthetic above all else, the Middleton II is a superb piece of kit. Just be sure your shoulder bag can handle the load.
